wall insulation

If your home has a cavity which has not been filled, we can fit the newest most effective cavity wall insulation for you. This is not the old style ‘wool’ insulation which has had a bad press in recent years, but a highly insulating bead fill which will not slump inside the cavity leaving cold spots and will not hold water which can lead to damp.
If your home has a solid wall (older properties with no cavity), we may be able to fit either external or internal wall insulation to keep your home warm. This will depend on the level of funding available to you and the suitability of your home to receive this type of insulation

Cavity Wall insulation

When you insulate the walls in your home, it creates a barrier that slows down the warm air from escaping and keeps warm air inside, resulting in a warmer home and improved energy efficiency as well as lower energy bills.

If your house was constructed after the 1930s, it is likely to have cavity walls. A cavity wall consists of two walls with a gap in between, known as the cavity. The outer layer is typically made of brick, while the inner layer is made of brick or concrete block.

Cavity wall insulation comes in several types, but generally an extruded bead insulation is the most effective form of insulation.  It is injected into the cavity with a liquid adhesive which then sets in the cavity like a ‘rice crispy bun’ so it can be easily broken up if needed, but the round beads of insulation allow water ingress to filter between the beads and escape rather than being held in other insulations such as wool fibre.

If your walls are solid rather than cavity, they will consist of a single or double layer of brick or stone which cannot be filled as there is no cavity

Solid Wall Insulation

When you don’t have a cavity, and your walls are solid, the way the insulation works is to either insulate internally or externally.  This again slows down the warm air from escaping and keeps warm air inside, resulting in a warmer home and improved energy efficiency as well as lower energy bills.

External wall insulation may require planning permission, and is very expensive to install.  It requires your roof to be extended enough to accommodate the insulation thickness and to avoid any water penetration behind the insulation once fitted.  It can give your home a facelift from the outside though!

Internal wall insulation is less expensive to install and requires no major alterations internally to install.  There are several systems available which consist of an insulation slab being fitted to the inside of your external walls (no internal walls between rooms) at a depth of around 90mm.  This is finished and plastered with skirting boards reinstated.
